The original U-shaped lay-out had the refrigerator in the corner, inappropriate storage and little counter space. By relocating the refrigerator there was a gain of 5 1/2 linear feet of counter space. Although we could not expand the size of the room, Carol Kornak designed spaces for spices, small appliances, cooking utensils and a charging station for phone and iPad. To add to the feeling of open space, a chimney hood and floating shelves replaced the typical solid bank of wall cherry wood cabinets. The homeowner wanted some “sparkle” (to match her personality). The Cambira countertops have flecks of copper. And the custom designed backsplash has a mix of glass and metal pieces in it. All of which complement the flat-panel cherry wood cabinets.
