Home Design for COVID-19

Bathroom, Kitchen, Trends

The global pandemic of 2020 has greatly impacted our lives. We are changing the way we are thinking about how we utilize our homes now that we are spending so much time sheltering in place. With this new normal, we need to also rethink how we design our home spaces.

Cleaning and Sanitation

Cleanliness is a top priority and new technologies and products are hitting the market to help make cleaning a breeze. Touch free faucets are a great way to ensure you are able to cook and clean without spreading contamination. Non-porous quartz countertops are a great choice to keep your kitchen and bathroom clean without having to use harsh cleaning products regularly. Slab backsplashes are another option keeping your space sterile without the use of grout and spacing between the tiles. Easy to clean slab door styles, both for cabinet fronts and interior doors, keep dust and grime from pooling in the details and are easy to wipe down.

Storage

The way we think about storage within our home has become more important as the way our homes serve us has evolved. Functional storage is so important throughout your home and in your kitchen. Adding pull out shelves, lazy susans, small appliance storage, trash pull outs, utensil and spice storage, all help to keep your space organized and less cluttered.

Finding the space to allow for additional food and supply storage is also an added consideration to home design. Since COVID-19, we are trying to limit our trips to the store. Larger pantries, fridges, and freezers allow us to bulk shop and store a week or more of food at a time.

Cooking & Entertaining at Home

Pre COVID-19, we used to get coffee on the go, lunch with coworkers, and go out for dinner a few nights a week. Now we are home and cooking more than ever, often preparing 3 meals a day. In doing so, a lot of us have found a new love for cooking. For many, cooking has become a way to relieve stress, or a cathartic form of entertainment. Making things from scratch, baking bread, canning, and barbecuing have become more of a hobby than a chore.

Because of this, larger and more functional kitchen layouts, upgraded appliances, more counter space, large islands with seating, home bars, and space to entertain friends and family at home are all considerations for refining our home.

Home Office & School Space

Most of our children are going to school online and many of us are working from home. We need a quiet place to do this. No one wants to be that guy on the zoom call with the screaming kids and the barking dog in the background. Home offices are no longer a luxury, they are a necessity. Instead of working from your dining room table or couch, let us design you a dedicated, functional, comfortable space where you can shut the door and go to work.
