Urban Farm House

2019 NKBA MN Award Winner

Minneapolis, MN

A large open space just didn’t fit this 100 year old farm house.

Potential

The biggest issue in remodeling this home is age. The home was built in 1918! The existing kitchen had few cabinets, no built in appliances, little wall space and no place to expand the room.

Client Requirements

Early in the design process it was decided not to open the wall to the dining room partly due to the cost and partly in respect of the vintage character of the home. A large open space just didn’t fit this 100 year old farm house. We need to modernize the kitchen within the existing footprint.

Every inch of the cabinetry was scrutinized for efficiency.

The clients wisely selected a 30” wide Liebherr refrigerator. The smaller width allowed it to be placed on the narrow wall next to the sink. Every inch of the cabinetry was scrutinized for efficiency. Current cabinets include roll-out, drawer dividers, spice organization.

Full extension, soft close drawers gave additional inches to maximize storage space. The cabinets in the breakfast bar included space for the microwave and storage for cereal and snacks above and below the 42” high counter.
